What races can you play in World of Warcraft?
The game features eight playable races, split between two factions: the

Alliance: Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draeni
Horde: Orcs, Tauren, Trolls, Undead, Blood Elf
Is there a chance we might see Ogres, Blood Elves, Naga, Pandaren, Goblins, or High Elves?
World of Warcraft is an enormous universe filled with many different races. All of those named above can be seen in the game as NPCs, but at this time, we can't announce any plans for future player races. The eight races mentioned above are the only playable races in the game.
Why are the Undead allied with the Horde?
Led by the banshee-queen Sylvanas, the Forsaken are an Undead faction that split violently with the Scourge during the Third War. Knowing that no Human agency would ever give them shelter or aid against the Scourge, now their hated enemy, they turned to the savage Horde, based across the sea in the distant land of Kalimdor, for assistance. To convince the Horde to accept the Forsaken into its alliance, the Undead ambassadors claimed that they merely sought a cure for their degenerative condition, which they said only the powers of shamanism and the life-giving energies of the earth could provide. In exchange for this healing aid, the Forsaken vowed to support the Horde in all of its ventures throughout Lordaeron and Azeroth.
Having done battle with the Undead on many occasions, Orc warchief Thrall and Tauren chieftain Cairne Bloodhoof of the Horde were immediately suspicious of the Forsaken's motives. However, due to growing political tensions, the warriors acquiesced to a council of sages known as The Earthen Ring. The council argued that it was the Horde's duty to aid the Forsaken, who wrestled with inner demons just as the Orcs had for generations.
Though Thrall and Cairne secretly suspect the worst, it remains to be seen what Sylvanas and her fanatical Forsaken have planned....
What can you tell us about the Gnomes?
The eccentric, often-brilliant Gnomes, known throughout the world for their obsession with developing radical new technologies and constructing mind-bending marvels of engineering, served the alliance well during the Second War. However, during the recent invasion of the Burning Legion, the Gnomes refused to send any personnel to aid their allies. Though Gnomish designs helped turn the tide against the Legion, the Dwarves and Humans were shocked by the Gnomes' decision to withhold their courageous troops and pilots.
When the war ended, the Alliance discovered the reason behind the Gnomes' sudden withdrawal: an ancient, barbaric menace had emerged from the bowels of the earth and invaded the Gnomes' wondrous techno-city of Gnomeregan. Knowing that their allies' priority was defeating the Burning Legion, the Gnomes decided to make their stand alone. They fought valiantly, but Gnomeregan was lost, and nearly half of the Gnomish race was wiped out.
Those Gnomes who survived fled to the safety of the Dwarven stronghold Ironforge, where they recommitted themselves to the Alliance's cause and also to devising strategies and weapons that would help them retake their ravaged city and build a brighter future for their people.
Who are the Tauren?
The Tauren are a mighty race of nomadic tribesmen who live on the dusty plains of a faraway land. These noble, bull-like hunters have lived in harmony for countless generations and are threatened only by the periodic raids of marauding centaur herds.
What are the racial traits?
You can check them out here.
Are there male and female versions of all of the races?
Yes. Even Tauren!
Does each race have unique properties?
Yes. Each race in the game has access to racial traits that set them apart from others.
Will there be different starting locations?
Most of the races have a unique starting location. The only races that do not are the Gnomes and Trolls, who share their starting location with the Dwarves and Orcs, respectively.
Do different races see differently? (i.e. Can Night Elves see better in the dark?)
No, all races will see the world in the exact same way (although Gnomes may see more knees than the rest of us). When the idea of racial eye sight came up on the table, the development team wanted to ensure that all races would be enjoyable to play. They also didn't want to give any specific race an advantage in this area.
What are the modes of transportation that are available to each race?
Each race has a unique land mount, and each faction possesses several shared aerial mounts. Land mounts can be purchased by players once they reach level 40, with better versions of these mounts also available at level 60. Aerial mounts can be ridden for a small fee to travel vast distances within the continents. Keep in mind that there are several other modes of transportation to be found in the game. You can learn more about transportation here.

Blizzard Downloader F.A.Q.

How does the Blizzard Downloader work?
The Blizzard Downloader allows users to download large files using a peer-to-peer protocol.

Each person downloading the file will offer a portion of their upload bandwidth to allow other users to download the same file. By using the upload bandwidth only, the individual user will not see a decrease in their download speed - in fact, the more users there are downloading the file, the faster everyone's individual download speed will be.

The Blizzard Downloader is only active when you are downloading files, and only accesses files associated with the data that you are downloading. Blizzard will not access or upload any other files, or obtain any personal information about you as a result of this activity.

Why isn't Blizzard supplying its own bandwidth to distribute patches and other content?
As in the past, Blizzard provides a large amount of its own bandwidth for distributing content. Peer-to-peer bandwidth is added on top of that to make the download faster for everyone.

Why isn't Blizzard buying more bandwidth to distribute content by itself?
Due to the incredible popularity of our games, buying enough bandwidth to deliver large amounts of content to our users as fast as they can download it is simply not an option. It is not feasible to get that amount of bandwidth at our datacenters. Peer-to-peer transfer of files scales much better when distributing large amounts of data to a large population of users in a timely manner.

What if I can't or don't want to use a peer to peer download
If you would like to use the built-in alternate download method, you can un-check the box for peer-to-peer downloading. This will reduce the potential download speed, since it is not as fast as peer-to-peer, but will draw the patch file directly from Blizzard's servers.

What files are being shared by the Blizzard Downloader?
The only files that are shared are the ones that the downloader is currently downloading. The downloader does not allow other peers to access arbitrary files on your computer. Files are only shared while the downloader is running.

Can I resume an incomplete download with the Blizzard Downloader?
Yes, when restarting the downloader, you can resume your existing download if you save to the same location.

Why would I want to use the Blizzard Downloader?
If you have ever downloaded a file from the internet, you know it can be time consuming and is often limited by the host's available bandwidth. By using the Blizzard Downloader, the user is not limited by any one host's capabilities - instead, the files are distributed across a wide range of users, allowing for a quicker download for everyone. By using the upload capabilities of each downloader, the overall file distribution is much more efficient for everyone.

Another benefit of using the Blizzard Downloader is that unlike a standard website download, it checks each segment of the file download to make sure that its size is correct. This built-in error checking can prevent download corruptions commonly associated with standard FTP downloads.

Can I receive corrupt data from other people downloading?
Every piece of data received from other users is verified before being written to the disk, so it is impossible for you to accept bad data from other users.

I have played other online games, and they all offer a direct download for patches. Why does this game require use of the Blizzard Downloader?
Due to the size of our updates, the Blizzard Downloader is the fastest way to distribute patches and content to our users. If we did not use the Downloader, users would experience long wait queues and/or slower download rates. The Blizzard Downloader distributes patches faster than the method used in all of our previous games.

The 'Estimated Download Time' is displaying "Calculating"! How long is the download going to take?
The 'Estimated Download Time' field will not be displayed until you have connected to an optimal number of peers and your connection speed has reached optimum levels. This is to prevent inaccurate estimates from causing confusion. When the Downloader switches peers, this may revert to "Calculating" but it should eventually return to a normal estimate.

I'm constantly displaying a "connecting to peers" message.
If you are using a firewall, you will need to ensure that ports 6112, 3724, and 6881 through 6999 are open in order for the Blizzard Downloader to connect correctly. If you are using a router, you may also need to set up port forwarding for these ports. You may need to refer to your firewall/router's documentation for instructions on opening ports and setting up port forwarding.

I'm getting a slow download speed, what can I do to improve it?
If you are using a firewall or router, be sure that port 6112, 3724, and 6881 through 6999 are open and forwarded to your computer and only your computer. You may need to refer to your firewall/router's documentation for instructions on opening ports and setting up port forwarding. Also, make sure that no other programs that use bandwidth are running while attempting to use the Blizzard Downloader.

I go to college and my network administrator blocked the ports required by the Blizzard Downloader. What can I do?
After a few minutes, the downloader will adjust to users behind network firewalls and begin to download the file through an alternative transfer method. This method will be slower than if the ports were open.
I am a network administrator for a campus or company. We would like to offer our users the ability to operate the Blizzard Downloader. How do we obtain the necessary information?
If you are an administrator for a network, please contact us directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for configuration information on how to allow access to the Blizzard Downloader.
